DubOrSub uses a mix of published preference research, language and media context, visitor votes, and public map data.

The map uses Natural Earth country geometry for the world map. Natural Earth data is public domain and commonly used for small-scale thematic maps.

Published seed preferences are based on publicly available research and reporting about subtitle and dubbing habits, including Morning Consult / Statista, Preply, kylian.ai, RFBerlin, and Senal News. These sources help provide a starting point before enough visitors vote.

Article pages also use contextual sources where relevant. For example, the Belgium article references UNESCO reporting about accessibility and subtitle obligations in the Flemish Community.

Visitor votes are displayed separately through country-level aggregate counts. They are not treated as formal polling data, but they make the map more useful and more current over time.

As more people contribute, DubOrSub can better reflect how anime viewers actually choose between subtitles, dubbing, and original audio across different countries.
